Just to give you an idea of how much they have "moved up" in the world, here's the rig that it replaced last year.

How come I see this and the theme from "SWAT" starts playing in my head...

Hi in most areas law enforcement handles the bomb calls. In about 1955 the Chief of Ontario, California FD decided to start a bomb squad. He was well into working with explosives as he did a lot of mining in the desert area.  The have had several different units which served the bomb squad through the years. One was ex Springfield Chevy Ambulance, a Grumman chassis "bread truck"  and ex mechanics vehicle. All towed a trailer: either a bomb sling carrier for transporting the device to a disposal area or trailer with various items used by bomb squad including a robot. Besides San Diego I believe at least one other FD; Cinncinnati, Ohio operates a bomb squad. Have couple shots of older rigs and am just waiting to get photo of new rig.

I think Springfield MA and Annapolis MD have Fire Department bomb squads.   Yes it is usually a police service, but I know there are few more fire based squads that I have seen pictures or mention over over the years.
