I saw one on a call last October. I was surprised see Battalion Chief on it. Good idea.

They started using them a few years ago now, shortly before the LAFD put out their experimental BC trucks that are some what similar.

Note in the passenger side photos, it appears to have a SCUBA set up in the rear cabinet, and a port a power (or some thing like it) in the front cabinet.    Any one have any idea what the inventory on one of these is?

My Department (Unified Fire Authority) currently runs Suburbans.  We looked at something like this and the rigs that Master Body made for LAFD.  Why we did not go with them, I don't know.  I'm thinking cost is the biggest issue.  The way our Battalion Chiefs run it makes sense to have items like: Spare air bottles (in leu of calling the utility truck, that is a jump piece that takes an engine out of service), Supplemental IRIT equipment and just extra equipment in general.  Of course the Suburbans aren't bad and since we don't have these rigs with service bodies I don't know the cons for them.  Looks like a great idea.

Interesting that LAFD is using this type of rig. Does anybody have a picture of the LAFD vehicle?

The LA rig looks like it has a shorter wheelbase than a typical short bed truck. Interesting truck though.

This is part of a reply on the flickr site from a LAFD PAO person:

"Following nearly a year of these comprehensive tests, the vehicles were lightly reconfigured, and now see daily LAFD duty as radio communications system support vehicles.

The operational data gathered during the tests may be utilized by LAFD in the future to guide command vehicle purchasing and configuration. As the Chevy Suburban/GMC YukonXL chassis remains in production, the need to move to such a pickup based vehicle is not seen as an imminent need. I hope this information helps."
